Meissen Role: Tone of Voice, Copy, Campaigns
Design: The Gaabs & MEISSEN

In 2018, Europe's oldest and most prestigious porcelain manufacturer underwent a comprehensive redesign.

Task: Drawing on the brand’s new contemporary look, I was brought on board to develop and implement a distinctive tone of voice and copy strategy in both German and English that echoed the manufacturer’s 300-year artistic legacy and artisanal tradition.

Approach:
Given Meissen’s unique history, my approach was straight-forward: conduct in-depth research to unearth the provenance, artistry, and, at times, scandalous anecdotes behind the brand’s many patterns, icons, and designs.

The tone, while replete with information, maintains a subtle demeanor, reflecting a sense of quiet confidence and "old money" sophistication. Playful innuendos and twists infuse a sense of lightheartedness and aristocratic verve, paying homage to the brand’s baroque origins.

Meissen’s lavishly embellished crater vase boasts over 100 historical patterns that require the expertise of 27 specialized painters to complete.
Sophisticated underglaze painting forms the point of departure, followed by an extensive array of patterns from more than 300 years of artistic excellence. Fanned out over 233 panels, the vase invites us on a well-nigh psychedelic journey through the manufactory's rich legacy.

Web Relaunch 2018
As senior copywriter, I assessed and evaluated the need for copy in coordination with the web development team. This involved drawing from various sources such as catalogues, brochures, company archives, and previous websites to align the content with all wireframes.

Working with the marketing department, I developed the tone of voice and editorial plan to outline copy formats, character limits, and cross-references, streamlining the process to ensure the creation of on-brand copy for the entire website. Delegating, copywriting, and proofreading in German and English when needed.

News Stories & Campaigns

From 2018 to 2022, I worked closely with Meissen's in-house marketing team to ideate and copywrite campaigns, news stories, product launches, and the brand's numerous fine art catalogs, including MEISSEN Icons, Limited Edition, Limited Masterworks, as well as special brand and artist collaborations that included Adidas, Supreme, Hugo Boss, Odeeh, Mühle, Olaf Hajek, and Chris Antemann. My work comprised both German and English copy.

Extra Contemporary: Serving as a grand launch event, a new chapter in the brand’s more than 300-year history opened with the Meissen Cabinet exhibition, inviting journalists, design aficionados, and the general public to toast and explore a lavishly decorated church ruin in Berlin.
